Web design trends are in a constant state of flux, though it’s becoming the norm to see trends from years gone by making a comeback.  Now more than ever, online audiences are more interested in a streamlined and simplified user experience than overly complex and convoluted visual presentation.

All of which comes down to today’s insatiable thirst for instant gratification – web users are all about getting what they want, when they want it and as quickly as they can get it.

In any case, there are several major web design trends that are once again topping the table in 2020. Base your new or revamped website around any of the following and it’s unlikely you’ll go far wrong.

Minimalism (Flat Design)

First up, the flat (or minimalist) approach to web design is nothing new.  It’s been one of the preferred trends for the world’s biggest brands and most notable designers for years and is still going strong in 2020.

Video Clips

The challenge with embedded video content lies in adding an energetic and engaging visual touch to your website, without it becoming a nuisance, a distraction or a drain on resources. Still, get it right and a single video clip – relevant, made by you and unique to your website – can be more appealing than all the textual content in the world.

Micro Animations

Small animations – aka micro animations – are great for adding a bit of fun and playfulness to a website, without taking things too far. They can also be particularly useful when guiding visitors through certain interactions, like placing orders and paying for products.

Organic Shapes

This basically refers to the types of shapes that exclude straight lines and angles from the equation entirely. Think how you’d draw the outline of a lake or the silhouette of rolling hills in the background – fluid curves, winding lines and often completely random organic shapes. All of which brings a distinct touch of softness to a website.

Data Visualisation

Data visualisation basically refers to the process of including visual elements on your pages that communicate interesting facts and figures. A high-impact strategy for most types of businesses, showcasing your proudest achievements and what makes you great in a concise, attractive and appealing way.

Bold Colour

Ostentatious imagery and vivacious visuals are more or less out, however, bursts of bright and bold colours in strategic places are very much in. Not to such an extent as to saturate the entire page with colour – more a useful tool for bringing life and energy to an otherwise minimalist design.

Colour Psychology

This basically refers to the use of specific colours to evoke specific moods and reactions in the visitor. Again, not what you’d call a new concept – colour psychology has been used by marketers, fashion designers and so on for generations. Whatever kind of mood and emotion you’re looking to evoke, your chosen colour palette can and will make a big difference.

Text-Only Images

One of the more interesting trends at the moment is that of using eye-catching typography where you would normally use a more conventional background image. The use of unique fonts, bold colours and strategic positioning holds the key to getting it right with these ‘text-only images’, which can be surprisingly effective when pulled off properly.

Bold Fonts

Speaking of which, bold fonts that border on brave (i.e. risky) are also trending in a bigger way this year.  One of the benefits of experiment with bold fonts being that it gives you the opportunity to differentiate yourself from your competitors and create something completely unique.

Clean, Crisp and Eye-Catching

Above all else, these are the three priorities all businesses and web designers should be focusing on this year.  As mentioned back at the beginning, the overwhelming majority of web users are more than willing to swap lavish visuals and unnecessary extras for a simple, streamlined and seamless UX.

Hence, you could say that less really is more, where the latest web design trends of 2020 are concerned.
